The Superintendent's Residence is a special building in Grand Canyon National Park. It was built in 1921. This building shows off the early National Park Service Rustic style. This style uses natural materials to blend with the environment.
It was first designed by Daniel Ray Hull to be the park's main office. A newspaper called the Brooklyn Daily Eagle even helped pay for the visitor information room! Later, in 1931, Thomas Chalmers Vint changed the building. It became the home for the park superintendent. The main park office moved to a new building. Today, this historic residence is part of the Grand Canyon Village Historic District. This whole area is a very important historical landmark.
What the Building Looks Like
When it was first built, the Superintendent's Residence was a two-story building. It had an "L" shape. The first floor was made of stone. The second floor was made of wood.
In 1931, the building was made bigger. The changes matched the original design. This kept its unique look. The main living areas are on the top floor. This includes eight rooms. You'll find the living room, dining room, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms here. Both the dining and living rooms have stone fireplaces. The main door opens onto a porch from the living room.
Downstairs, there is a family room. It also has a stone fireplace. This room used to be the visitor information office. The rest of the lower floor has many different rooms. Winding hallways connect these rooms to a garage for two cars. Currently, the building is used for offices. These offices belong to one of the companies that works with the park.
Why This Building is Important
The Superintendent's Residence was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 6, 1974. This is a special list of places important to American history.
It is also a key part of the Grand Canyon Village Historic District. This entire district is a National Historic Landmark District. This means it's recognized as a place of great national importance.
