Agave phillipsiana is a special plant often called the Grand Canyon century plant or Phillips agave. It's a very rare type of flowering plant that belongs to the asparagus family. You can only find this plant growing in one place: Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, United States. This makes it "endemic" to that area, meaning it naturally lives nowhere else in the world.

About the Grand Canyon Century Plant

This plant is known for its unique look and where it grows. It's a fascinating part of the Grand Canyon's natural world.

What Does It Look Like?

The Grand Canyon century plant grows in a cool way. It forms one or more "rosettes." Imagine a big, circular cluster of leaves, like a giant flower that doesn't bloom.

  • Its leaves are long and shaped like a spear, called "lance-shaped."
  • They are green to gray-green in color.
  • The edges of the leaves have small teeth.
  • The tips of the leaves have sharp spines.
  • Each leaf can grow up to 78 centimeters (about 30 inches) long and 11 centimeters (about 4 inches) wide.

When it's ready to flower, a tall stalk shoots up from the center of the rosette. This stalk can reach an amazing height of 5.5 meters (about 18 feet)! At the top, it has many branches with clusters of flowers. Each flower is about 7 or 8 centimeters (around 3 inches) wide. They are greenish and cream-colored, sometimes with hints of maroon. Long parts called "stamens" stick out from the flowers. Stamens are the parts of a flower that produce pollen.

Where Does It Grow?

This rare plant is found in only a few spots, all inside Grand Canyon National Park. There are just four known groups of these plants. They like to grow on flat areas, called terraces, right next to rivers.

Its History and Protection

Even though there aren't many Grand Canyon century plants, they grow in places that are hard for people to reach. Being inside a national park also helps protect them from harm.

Interestingly, some of the places where this plant grows were once home to indigenous peoples a long time ago. Scientists think these ancient communities might have grown and harvested this plant. They may have even chosen plants that were easy to grow and collect. This shows how people and plants have been connected for many, many years.
