Museum History

The Grand Rapids Art Museum started a long time ago, in 1910. It was first called the Grand Rapids Art Gallery. Soon after, its name was changed to what it is today.

Early Locations

The museum first opened in an old house at 230 Fulton Street. In 1981, it moved to a historic building. This building was the Federal Building on Pearl Street.

A New, Green Building

In 2004, construction began on a brand new building for the museum. This new building was special because it was designed to be a green museum. This means it was built to be good for the environment.

The building is certified LEED Gold. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This certification means the building meets high standards for being eco-friendly. The museum building is about 125,000 square feet. It has 20,000 square feet just for art galleries and exhibitions.

The design for the new building started with Munkenbeck+Marshall Architects. Later, another architect named Kulapat Yantrasast helped finish the project.
