The Grand Western Lodge is a historic building located at 27 Victoria Street in Millthorpe, Australia. It used to be a hotel and then a boarding house. Built by John Wells, this important building was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999, recognizing its special history and design.

A Look Back: The Lodge's Story

The Grand Western Lodge was built in 1901 for John Frape. It was constructed by a builder named John Wells. This building was placed in a very important spot right in the middle of town.

Why the Lodge Was Built

Back then, the area around Millthorpe was growing fast. The Grand Western Lodge was built to welcome the many visitors coming to the district. A big reason people visited was for exciting ploughing demonstrations and competitions. The hotel provided a place for them to stay.

Changes Over Time

The Grand Western Lodge stopped being a hotel in 1961. Years later, in 1982, the owners received help to fix up the verandahs. These are the covered porches often found on the outside of buildings. This work helped keep the building looking good.

In 1986, the Grand Western Lodge was given a "Permanent Conservation Order." This means it was officially recognized as a building worth protecting because of its heritage. It was then added to the State Heritage Register in 1999.

A New Purpose

In 1987, the building was changed into a licensed boarding house. This facility provided accommodation for people with disabilities. It operated for many years, until 2011.

After its time as a boarding house, the building was put up for sale in 2018. It was advertised as a place that could be used for different purposes, such as a bed and breakfast or other services.

What the Lodge Looks Like

The Grand Western Lodge is a large building with two floors. It is made of face brick, which means the bricks are visible on the outside. It's a great example of an Edwardian-style pub.

Special Features

The building has some unique design elements:

  • Windows: It features unusual "keyhole" shaped windows.
  • Stained Glass: There are also colorful stained glass windows with pictures.
  • Verandah: A very noticeable part of the building is its two-story verandah. It has decorative cast iron railings and fancy trim work.
  • Parapet: In the center, there's a large, decorated wall section called a parapet, which rises above the roofline.

Inside the building, not much of the original design remains. However, its outside appearance clearly shows its historic style.

Why the Lodge is Important

The Grand Western Lodge is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register because it meets certain important criteria.

Historical Significance

This building is important because it shows how the area developed in the early 1900s. It was built during a busy time for rural growth and helped support the many visitors to Millthorpe. It played a role in the town's history as a place for people to stay, especially during events like ploughing competitions.

Architectural Beauty

The Grand Western Lodge is also important for its design. It's a fine example of an Edwardian-era pub. Its unique windows, stained glass, and the well-designed two-story verandah make it stand out. The large central parapet also adds to its special look. These features show a high level of creative design and building skill from that time.
