Grandmother Winter is a lovely picture book from 1999. It was written by Phyllis Root and the beautiful pictures were drawn by Beth Krommes. This was actually the first book Beth Krommes ever illustrated! The story is inspired by old German fairy tales and helps explain how the seasons change.

About Grandmother Winter

Grandmother Winter is a picture book made for children. It tells the story of the seasons in a very special, poetic way. The tale gets its ideas from an old German fairy tale called "Mother Holle".

The Story of Grandmother Winter

In the book, Grandmother Winter loves spending time with her white geese. As the geese lose their soft feathers, she carefully collects them. She uses these feathers to fill a warm quilt that she is making.

When Grandmother Winter finishes sewing her quilt, something magical happens. Snowflakes begin to fall from the sky! As the soft snow covers everything, people and animals find cozy, warm places. They snuggle into their homes and nests. After all the snow has fallen, Grandmother Winter herself goes to sleep under her own warm quilt.

How the Pictures Were Made

The artist, Beth Krommes, used a special technique to create the pictures for the book. She made hand-tinted scratchboard drawings. This means she scratched lines into a dark surface to show the images, then added color by hand. Grandmother Winter was her very first time illustrating a picture book.
