About Granger
Its History
Granger has a long history. A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, was first opened there in 1816. This post office helped connect the community to the rest of the country for many years, until it closed in 1901.
How Granger Got Its Name
The community of Granger was named after an important person named Gideon Granger. He was a politician who served in the Connecticut House of Representatives, which is like a state-level law-making group. Gideon Granger also held a very important job in the early U.S. government: he was the 4th United States Postmaster General. This meant he was in charge of all mail delivery for the entire country at that time. For a while, Granger was also known by a slightly different name, "Grangerburg."
