Granite Creek (British Columbia) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Granite Creek is a small creek and a former town in British Columbia, Canada. It is located in the Similkameen region. The creek flows north and joins the Tulameen River about two and a half kilometers east of Coalmont, British Columbia.

Granite Creek became famous for its gold. It is believed that over $500,000 worth of gold was found there since it was first discovered. In the early days, it was common to find large gold nuggets. Some of these nuggets were worth as much as $50! Miners from Europe and China worked hard to find gold in the creek. In the 1890s, a method called "hydraulicking" was used near the creek's mouth. This involved using powerful jets of water to wash away gravel and find gold.

How Gold Was Found at Granite Creek

Most stories say that gold was first found in Granite Creek in 1885. A person named Johnny Chance discovered "placer gold" there. Placer gold is gold found in flakes or nuggets in riverbeds or streams. Another story suggests that Briggs, Bromley, and a third partner found the gold earlier, in the fall of 1884.

The Gold Rush Begins

When news of the gold spread, many miners rushed to Granite Creek. This quick movement of people is called a "gold stampede." Miners set up a camp where Granite Creek meets the Tulameen River. This camp quickly grew into a small town, also known as Granite Creek, British Columbia.

The Town's Rise and Fall

The gold mining boom at Granite Creek lasted for about ten years. As time went on, less and less gold was found in the creek. By 1915, the town of Granite Creek had almost completely disappeared. Today, it is mostly a historical site.
