Grease is a super popular musical created by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey in 1971. The name Grease comes from the "greasers," a cool group of young people in the 1950s United States. They were known for their slicked-back hair and unique style!
The story of Grease happens in 1959. It's set at a made-up school called Rydell High, which is in Chicago. The musical is all about the fun and sometimes tricky romance between two high school students, Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski.
The First Shows
Grease first opened its doors to audiences in Chicago in 1971. It was a big hit!
Broadway Debut
The musical then moved to Broadway in New York City. It started playing at the Broadhurst Theatre on June 7, 1972. Grease was incredibly successful on Broadway. It ran for a very long time, with 3,388 shows in total, before closing on April 13, 1980.
West End Performances
Not long after its Broadway success, Grease also opened in London's famous West End in 1973. This showed how popular the musical was around the world.
