The Greendale Village Improvement Society Building is a special old building in Worcester, Massachusetts. It's located at 480 West Boylston Street. This building was built in 1897. It reminds us how much community groups helped improve towns a long time ago. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it's an important historical site.

What Does This Historic Building Look Like?

The Greendale Village Improvement Society Building is on the east side of West Boylston Street. It stands between Airlie Street and the Frances Perkins Branch Library. It is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and has a hip roof. The outside is covered with clapboard siding.

There is a tall, square tower on one corner. This tower has three stories and a pointed roof. A large triangle-shaped gable is above the front entrance. In the middle of this gable are two windows. Above them is a half-circle window. The area below the gable sticks out a little. There is also a porch at the entrance.

Inside the building, you would find different rooms. The basement had a kitchen and a dining room. On the first floor, there was a small meeting room and a library. The second floor had a very large hall. This hall was used for big meetings and events.

A Place for the Community: Its History

The Greendale Improvement Society started in 1895. It was a group of people who wanted to make their neighborhood better. They wanted to improve conditions in the Greendale area of Worcester. In 1897, the group changed its name. It became the Greendale Village Improvement Society.

A family called the Kendricks gave the society some land. This land was used to build a meeting house. The society worked hard to raise money. The building was finished and ready in 1900. This building became a very important place for the community.

The society did many helpful things. In its early years, it built and took care of roads. They even plowed the roads when it snowed. They also asked the city for fire protection. The society helped with trash removal too. After the Second World War, the building was used by groups for veterans.
