Greg Richardson (born February 7, 1958) is a former professional boxer. He was the WBC Bantamweight Champion for several months in 1991.
Early Life and Amateur Success
Greg Richardson was born in Youngstown, Ohio. He grew up on the East Side of the city.
Sports were important in his family. His nephew, Keiwan Ratliff, played football for the Florida Gators. Another nephew, Durrell Richardson, is also a boxer.
Greg started boxing in the late 1960s. He quickly became very good. In 1974, he won two big amateur titles. He became the National AAU champion. He also won the National Golden Gloves flyweight championship.
Professional Boxing Journey
Greg Richardson was known as "The Flea" because of his quick movements. He became a professional boxer in 1982.
His biggest moment came in February 1991. He won the WBC world bantamweight title. This was a surprise victory over Raúl Pérez. Greg's trainer, Earl Charity, helped him prepare. Greg's fast reflexes helped him win the 12-round fight. The judges all agreed he was the winner.
He defended his title once against Victor Rabanales. But later in 1991, he lost the belt to Joichiro Tatsuyoshi. In 1992, he tried to win another title. He fought for the WBC super flyweight title against Moon Sung-kil. However, he lost that fight. Greg Richardson retired from boxing in 1996.
During his career, Greg also held other important titles. He was the NABF Bantamweight Title holder. He also won the USBA Bantamweight and Super Bantamweight Titles.
