Gregory Shahade (born December 22, 1978) is an International Master in the game of chess. This means he is a very strong chess player, just below the top title of Grandmaster. Greg is well-known for starting important chess events. He founded the New York Masters and the U.S. Chess League. He also helped lead the United States Chess Federation for a time. His younger sister, Jennifer Shahade, is also a famous chess player.
Greg's Early Chess Journey
Greg Shahade was a chess "prodigy," meaning he was extremely talented at a young age. He had a fantastic school chess career. He won three national chess championships. In 1993, he tied for first place in the National Junior High School Championship. He also tied for first in the 1996 National High School Championship. In the same year, he won the 1996 United States Junior Open all by himself.
Greg was the top player for Julia R. Masterman School in 1996. That year, his school won its first of four National High School Chess Championships. In 1999, Greg won the special Samford Fellowship. This award gives money to the best young American chess players under 25. It helped him train and play in big tournaments. He won it again in 2000. This helped him earn his first "Grandmaster norm" in 2001. A norm is a high score needed to become a Grandmaster.
Helping Young Chess Players
Since 2006, Greg has run many sessions of the US Chess School. This school invites the best young chess talents in the country. They get to train with top chess Grandmasters. This helps them improve their game a lot. Greg also founded and was the leader of the U.S. Chess League. This league was a team competition for chess players. It ran until 2016.
Family and Other Projects
Greg comes from a chess-playing family. His father, Michael Shahade, is a FIDE Master. His mother, Sally Solomon, was a university professor and author. His sister, Jennifer Shahade, is a Woman Grandmaster. This is a high title for female chess players.
Since 2007, Greg has been making chess videos online at ChessVideos.tv. He also hosts U.S. Chess lessons. In these lessons, he invites other coaches to teach future chess stars. Today, Greg is the leader of the Professional Rapid Online Chess League. This is an online league where chess players compete quickly.
