Gretel Bueta (born 3 July 1993) is a famous Australian netball player. Before becoming a netball star, she was also a talented basketball player. She is known for her amazing skills as a goal attack and goal shooter.

Gretel's Basketball Journey

Before netball, Gretel played basketball. She played for the Australian Institute of Sport. This was in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) during the 2010/2011 season. She also played for the Logan Thunder. In 2011, she was named the WNBL Rookie of the Year.

Playing for Australia

Gretel also played in three junior World Championships.

  • In 2009, she played in the Under 19 World Championships in Thailand. Australia finished 5th.
  • In 2010, she played in the Under 17 World Championships in France. Australia finished 7th.
  • In 2011, she played in the Under 19 World Championships in Chile. Australia finished 4th.

Switching to Netball

In March 2012, Gretel decided to switch from basketball to netball. She started playing as a goal attack and goal shooter.

Early Netball Career

In 2013, Gretel joined the Queensland Firebirds as a replacement player. Later that year, she was chosen for the Australian Under 21 netball team. They played in the 2013 World Youth Netball Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. Australia came in second place. After this, she joined the New South Wales Swifts.

Gretel made her first appearance in the ANZ Championship in 2014. She had signed with the NSW Swifts for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Returning Home and Diamond Status

At the end of 2014, Gretel left the NSW Swifts early. She wanted to be closer to her family. She then signed with the Queensland Firebirds for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. She was later chosen for the Australian Diamonds squad. This is Australia's national netball team.

Awards and Achievements

Gretel has been named in the Super Netball Team of the Year three times. This happened in 2018, 2019, and 2022. In 2022, she also won the Liz Ellis Diamond award. This is the highest award in Australian netball. It goes to the best player in both local and international games.

Time Away and Comeback

Gretel took a break from netball in 2020. She was pregnant with her first child. She returned to play in the 2021 season. She was one of the top 15 shooters in the league. She scored 266 points with 80.5% accuracy. She continued playing for the Queensland Firebirds in 2022. She was named the Most Valuable Player for the Firebirds. In the 2022 Netball Quad Series, she had a great performance. She shot with 93% accuracy and was named player of the match.

Personal Life

Gretel's maiden name was Tippett. She is the sister of two former AFL players. Her brothers are Kurt and Joel. Her parents are Tony and Janet Tippet.

She married her long-time boyfriend, Niko Bueta, on 7 March 2020. They welcomed their first child, Bobby, in January 2021. Gretel announced in October 2022 that she was expecting her second child. She missed the 2023 SSN season and World Cup due to her pregnancy. In August 2024, she announced she was expecting a baby girl.
