What it Looks Like

This shrub usually grows to about 3 metres (almost 10 feet) tall. It has prickles and its leaves are deeply cut, like fingers. These leaves can be up to 50 mm (2 inches) long and 30 mm (1.2 inches) wide.

The flowers of Grevillea vestita are white, cream, or sometimes light pink. They have a nice smell. You'll see the most flowers in winter or spring, but they can bloom at other times of the year too.

Plant Family and Names

Scientists group plants into families and give them special names. This helps us understand them better. The first person to describe Grevillea vestita was an Austrian botanist named Stephan Endlicher in 1839. He collected a sample from the King George Sound area and called it Manglesia vestita.

Later, in 1845, another botanist named Carl Meissner moved this plant into the Grevillea group. The name vestita comes from a Latin word meaning "covered in hairs," which describes how some parts of the plant look.

Types of Grevillea vestita

There are two main types, or subspecies, of Grevillea vestita that scientists recognize:

  • Grevillea vestita subsp. vestita
  • Grevillea vestita subsp. isopogoides F.Muell. ex McGill. This type has smaller leaves with edges that roll under.

Some plants that were once thought to be types of Grevillea vestita are now considered their own separate species. For example, Grevillea vestita var. angustata is now Grevillea curviloba subsp. curviloba, and Grevillea vestita var. stenogyne is now Grevillea stenogyne.

Growing Grevillea vestita

This plant is popular in gardens because it produces many flowers and grows well in different conditions. It can handle a bit of frost and humidity. If you trim it, it will grow even better.

You can grow Grevillea vestita from seeds, but it's often grown from cuttings. This means taking a small piece of the plant and helping it grow roots.
