Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gruffudd ap Owain Glyndŵr (born around 1375, died around 1412) was the oldest son of Margaret Hanmer and Owain Glyndŵr. His father, Owain, was a famous leader who started a big rebellion in Wales. This fight for freedom lasted from 1400 to about 1416.

Growing Up in Wales

Not much is known about Gruffudd's childhood or his brothers and sisters. We do know that Gruffudd was Owain's firstborn son. If his father's rebellion had won, Gruffudd would have been the next ruler of an independent Wales.

Fighting in the Rebellion

Gruffudd took part in a military raid in southern Wales in 1405. He fought alongside his uncle, Tudur ap Gruffudd, and another rebel captain, Rhys Gethin. They faced a strong English army led by Prince Henry of Monmouth. This prince later became King Henry V of England. Some records suggest John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury might have also been involved.

The exact location and date of this battle are debated by historians. However, old Welsh records called the Annals of Owain Glyndwr name it the Battle of Pwll Melyn. This battle took place near Usk. It was a major defeat for the Welsh rebels. Gruffudd ap Owain Glyndŵr was captured during this battle. Sadly, his uncle Tudur and Rhys Gethin were killed.

Imprisonment and Death

After his capture, Gruffudd was first held in a prison in Nottingham. From there, he was moved to the famous Tower of London. He spent seven years as a prisoner in the Tower. Sadly, Gruffudd died in prison from the bubonic plague, a serious illness, around 1412.

His Family

It is not known if Gruffudd ever got married. We also do not know if he had any children of his own.
