Guido Dessauer (born 7 November 1915 – died 13 January 2012) was a German scientist and business leader. He was a physicist and helped create new ways to make paper. He also collected art and supported artists.

Guido Dessauer came from a family that owned paper factories. During World War II, he worked on planes and space travel. After the war, he became a leader in his family's colored paper factory. He was given a special honor in Austria for saving 300 jobs there. He earned a very high university degree in his late 50s and became a respected teacher at a university. He loved art and collected small models for sculptures. He also helped the artist Horst Janssen start his career in printing.

Life Story

Guido Dessauer was born in Aschaffenburg, Germany. His family owned a famous factory that made colored paper. His parents were Hans and Bertha Dessauer. His uncle, Friedrich Dessauer, was a well-known scientist and politician.

Guido went to a special high school in Aschaffenburg. There, he learned old languages like Greek and Latin. Later, he wished he had learned Hebrew to read his Jewish ancestors' writings. He studied physics at the University of Munich. He was also very interested in art and history.

During World War II, he worked on research for planes and rockets. After the war, he became a leader in the paper industry. He invented many new things and had over 30 patents. In 1945, he joined his family's paper factory. By 1951, he was the technical managing director. Later, he led a research team at another paper company.

In 1985, Guido Dessauer became an honorary professor. This was at the Institute for Paper, Pulp and Fibre Technology. He had earned his high university degree there in 1972.

Guido was a member of the Rotary Club starting in 1957. He helped start the Rotary Club in Aschaffenburg in 1958. He was also an honorary member of a group that studies the history of paper.

In 1949, Guido married Gabrielle von Keller. She was the daughter of a diplomat. They had four children: Irene, Franziska, Friederike, and Gabriel Dessauer. Gabriel became a church musician. The family lived in Tutzing, where Guido Dessauer passed away in 2012.

Art Collection

Guido Dessauer collected European sculptures. He was especially interested in small models for sculptures. These models are called maquettes or bozzetti. Experts find them interesting because they show how artists create their work.

His collection, called the Sammlung Dessauer, had 340 pieces. It was the largest private collection of these models in Germany. In 2002, some of his Baroque-era models were shown in museums. The exhibition was called Little Ecstasies – Baroque Master Works from the Dessauer Collection. It featured works by famous sculptors like Antonio Canova and Jean-Antoine Houdon.

In the early 1950s, Dessauer asked Horst Janssen to paint a portrait of his father-in-law. Janssen then painted other family members. Janssen was able to create his first prints using the special equipment at Dessauer's paper factory.

Awards and Honors

In 1964, Guido Dessauer received a special honor from Austria. He was made an honorary citizen because he saved 300 jobs at a paper factory there. He also received a high award from the state of Styria for his work in the paper industry and for supporting art.

In 2008, Dessauer was given the German Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande. This is a high award given for special achievements in Germany.
