Gulgong Station's Journey Through Time

When the Station First Opened

The Gulgong railway station first opened its doors on 14 April 1909. This happened when the railway line was extended from Mudgee to Gulgong. It was a big deal for the town back then!

Changes in Train Services

Passenger trains stopped running to Gulgong on 2 December 1985. Later, freight trains (which carry goods) between Gulgong and Kandos also stopped in 1992. However, a different freight line, the Sandy Hollow–Gulgong railway line, still uses parts of the Gwabegar line for freight.

What It's Used For Today

Even though trains don't stop there for passengers anymore, the station building is still used. It is now rented out to the Mid-Western Regional Council.

What Does Gulgong Station Look Like?

The station has a special look from when it was built in 1909. It features a timber (wooden) station building. This building has a unique roof called a skillion roof. There's also a wooden platform where people would wait for trains. The station complex also includes an old pump house and a dam.

Why Gulgong Station is a Heritage Site

The Importance of Gulgong's Railway History

Gulgong is a town with a lot of history, and the railway played a big part in its growth. The remaining buildings at the station are important because they show how the area developed. These buildings are simple and strong, just like the early buildings from the start of the 1900s.

A Snapshot from 1909

All the buildings at the station were built at the same time. This means they all share a similar style. What's really cool is that no new buildings were added after 1909. So, the Gulgong railway station site is like a time capsule, showing exactly what a railway group looked like in 1909.

Why It's Listed as Special

The Gulgong railway station was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. It met certain rules to be considered a special historical place. It's seen as historically, architecturally, and socially rare. This means it's a unique example of its kind in New South Wales.
