The Gustave Bartman House is a cool old building in southeast Portland, Oregon. It's a two-and-a-half-story house that's so special, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical place in the United States.

The house was built in 1892. It's designed in a style called Queen Anne. This style was popular during the Victorian era. The house was added to the National Register in 1989. Gustave Bartman, who was a contractor, might have even built the house himself!

What Makes This House Special?

The Gustave Bartman House is a great example of a duplex from its time. A duplex is a building that has two separate homes inside it. This house has two apartments, one on each floor, and they are almost exactly the same.

Cool Design Features

The house has some really neat parts that make it stand out:

  • A tall window bay that sticks out from the house.
  • Special imbricated shingles. These are like fancy overlapping tiles on the outside walls.
  • A double veranda. This is a long, open porch, and this house has two of them!

A Piece of Portland's History

This house was built just one year after the city of East Portland became part of the bigger city of Portland. So, it's a reminder of how Portland grew and changed over time. It shows us what homes looked like in the late 1800s.
