György Szabad (born August 4, 1924, died July 3, 2015) was an important Hungarian politician and historian. He helped start a political group called the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF). From 1990 to 1994, he was the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary. This means he was like the leader of the Hungarian parliament, helping to run meetings and make sure rules were followed.

Life and Career

György Szabad was born in Arad, Romania. He grew up to become a historian, studying and writing about the past. He was also very active in politics.

Political Role

Mr. Szabad played a key role in Hungary's move towards democracy. He was a founding member of the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF). This party was important during the changes in Hungary in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He was elected as a member of the National Assembly, which is Hungary's parliament. He served there from 1990 to 1998. His most important job was being the Speaker of the National Assembly. He held this position from 1990 to 1994. As Speaker, he helped guide the country through its early years of democracy.

György Szabad was married twice. His first wife was Judit Szegő. Later, he married Andrea Suján. He had a daughter named Júlia from his second marriage.

Awards and Recognition

György Szabad received several important awards for his work. In 2006, he was given the Széchenyi Prize. This award recognized his efforts to improve Hungarian history studies. It also honored his life's work as a historian.

In 2005, he received the President's Medal for Merit. This was for his excellent creative work and his political activities. These activities always aimed to serve the community. He also received the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit. This high honor recognized his part in creating a democratic Hungary. It also celebrated his long career in science and teaching.

Death

György Szabad passed away on July 3, 2015. He was 90 years old.
