The Life of a Math Whiz

Henry William Lloyd Tanner was born on January 17, 1851, in a place called Burham, in Kent, England. He went to school at Bristol Grammar School. Later, he studied at Jesus College, Oxford, where a famous mathematician named John Griffiths was his teacher.

In 1883, H. W. Lloyd Tanner became a professor. He taught Mathematics and Astronomy at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire. This university is now known as Cardiff University. He worked there as a professor until 1909.

Tanner was also a special member of two very important scientific groups: the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society. These memberships showed how respected he was in the world of science. He wrote many important papers about different math topics, including something called differential equations.

After Tanner passed away, the President of the Royal Society, Sir William Crookes, spoke about him in November 1915. Sir William said that with Tanner's death, the world of mathematics had lost "one of its most distinguished exponents." He also mentioned that Tanner's math investigations were "distinguished by great ingenuity and originality." Sir William Crookes also said that the university owed a lot to Tanner for his amazing teaching and leadership skills.
