HMVS Albert was a special type of small warship called a gunboat. She belonged to the Victorian Naval Forces, which was the navy for the colony of Victoria in Australia. Later, during World War I, she was asked to serve with the Royal Australian Navy.
Albert's Journey and Service
The HMVS Albert was built in the United Kingdom by a company called Armstrong, Mitchell and Co. She was finished in early 1884. After she was ready, she sailed all the way to Victoria, Australia. She traveled with two other ships, the HMVS Victoria and the HMVS Childers. They all arrived together on June 25, 1884.
Albert's time serving with the Victorian navy was quite short and calm. In 1890, her main gun was updated. Then, in 1893, she was taken out of active service and put into a reserve fleet. This means she was kept ready in case she was needed again.
In 1897, the ship was sold to the Victorian Public Works Department. This department usually handles things like roads and buildings. During World War I, the Albert was needed again. The navy planned to turn her into a tugboat, which is a powerful boat used to pull other ships. However, these plans were canceled before any work began. The Albert was then sold off in 1917.
Ships Like Albert
The Albert was a bit like a smaller, older sister ship to two other gunboats: the Gayundah and the Paluma. These ships were also built in 1884. They served with the colony of Queensland, another part of Australia. All these ships were designed by Armstrong Mitchell and Co. and were known as "flat-iron gunboats" because of their shape.
