HSU First Street Gallery facts for kids
The HSU First Street Gallery was a cool art gallery in Eureka, California. It was first at 422 1st Street, then moved to 416 3rd Street in the old part of town. This gallery was part of Humboldt State University. It showed modern art from artists all over the world, and also art by students, teachers, and people who used to go to the university.
The gallery was a place for students to learn about running an art space. Sadly, the university closed the gallery in September 2018. This happened because of budget cuts.

What the Gallery Wanted to Do
The First Street Gallery had an important goal. It wanted to bring modern art to the North Coast area of California. It also wanted to share this art with the people at Humboldt State University. The gallery showed art from artists who lived nearby, across the country, and even from other parts of the world.
Students from HSU helped run the gallery. They learned how to get art ready, set up exhibits, and manage the space. They also learned to be careful about the environment while working. Students studying art education used the gallery to teach younger kids (from kindergarten to 12th grade) about art. The gallery hoped to start conversations about important cultural topics through its art shows. From 1998 to 2018, the HSU First Street Gallery put on many different art shows.
Gallery History

Learning Programs
The First Street Gallery was a great place for students to learn.
- Students from the Museum and Gallery Practices Program got hands-on experience. They learned how to prepare, install, and manage art shows.
- The HSU Art Education Program used the gallery as a teaching spot. Their students taught art to local kids from kindergarten to 12th grade.
- The gallery also brought famous artists to HSU. These artists came from all over the country and the world. This program let people in California's North Coast see new kinds of art. Art that they might not usually get to see.
Special Events
Every first Saturday of the month, the First Street Gallery took part in "Arts Alive!". This is a local event where galleries and museums in Eureka open their doors. They show new exhibits, performances, and music. During Arts Alive!, the First Street Gallery held a special opening party for its current art shows. This was a chance for visitors to meet the artists whose work was on display.
