Hachette Book Group (HBG) is a really big company that publishes books. It's actually the third largest book publisher in the whole world! HBG is owned by Hachette Livre, which is part of an even bigger company called Lagardère Group.

HBG started on March 31, 2006. That's when Hachette Livre bought the Time Warner Book Group from Time Warner. HBG's main office is in New York City, in a part of town called Midtown Manhattan.

Hachette is one of the "Big Five" publishing companies. These are the largest book publishers in the United States. The other big companies are Holtzbrinck/Macmillan, Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, and Simon & Schuster.

Every year, HBG publishes a lot of books. They release over 1,400 books for adults. This includes many digital-only books. They also publish about 300 books for young readers. Plus, they create around 450 audiobooks each year. In 2016, 214 of their books made it onto the famous New York Times bestseller list. Forty-four of those books even reached the number one spot!

What Are Imprints?

A publishing company often has different "imprints." Think of an imprint like a brand name for a certain type of book. Each imprint might focus on different kinds of stories or authors. For example, one imprint might publish fantasy novels, while another publishes cookbooks.

Hachette Book Group's Imprints

Hachette Book Group has many different imprints. These are like smaller publishing houses under the main HBG umbrella. Each imprint helps bring different kinds of books to readers.

Here are some of the main imprints at Hachette Book Group:

  • Grand Central Publishing
  • Little, Brown and Company
  • Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (This imprint focuses on books for kids and teens!)
  • Hachette Books
  • Hachette Nashville
  • Orbit Books (This one is known for science fiction and fantasy books.)
  • Perseus Books
  • Hachette Audio (This imprint creates audio versions of books.)
