Hacienda Kancabchén (also called Kancabchén Gamboa) is a historic estate in the Baca Municipality of Yucatán, Mexico. It is located in the southeastern part of the country. The word Kancabchén comes from the Mayan language and means 'the well of the red ground'. This hacienda was built during the 1800s, a time when growing henequen plants was very important for the region's economy. It is about 22 kilometers (14 miles) from the city of Mérida.
History of Hacienda Kancabchén
Haciendas are large estates, often with a main house, farms, and other buildings. Hacienda Kancabchén was built around 1890 or 1912 by Pascual Gamboa Rivero. He used the property for raising livestock and growing henequen. Henequen is a type of agave plant used to make strong fibers for ropes and other products.
Later, Pascual Gamboa Rivero's daughter, Josefina Gamboa de Casares, inherited the hacienda. She owned it until 1985. In that year, the Ponce Garcia family bought the property. They changed its use, turning it into a dairy farm and a place for people to relax and hold events.
Architecture and Features
Hacienda Kancabchén was built in the traditional style of colonial haciendas. The main building has a beautiful front with three arches. On top of the building, there is a bell tower and a large clock.
The main house is quite grand. It has lovely wall paintings, big rooms, tall ceilings, and large windows. It has two floors with eight bedrooms, a kitchen, a breakfast area, a library, a living room, and bathrooms. There is also a special room that was used as a casino.
The property also includes a chapel, which is a small church. It is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua and can hold up to 200 people. Outside, there are gardens, stables for horses, a rodeo arena, and a zoo. The hacienda is large enough to host private events for as many as 600 guests.
