Hacienda Kancabchén is a historic estate located in the Homún Municipality in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. It was one of many large farms that became important during the 1800s. This was a time when the henequen plant was a very valuable crop. Henequen was used to make ropes and other products. There are several other places in Yucatán with a similar name, like Hacienda Kancabchén in Baca and Hacienda Kancabchén (Halachó).

Meaning of the Name

The name Kancabchén comes from the Mayan language. It means "the well of the red ground." This name likely describes the type of soil and water found at the hacienda.

History of the Hacienda

Haciendas in Yucatán were like big farms or estates. Many of them grew henequen, a plant similar to agave, which was used to make strong fibers.

Changes to the Name

Over the years, the name of Hacienda Kancabchén changed a few times. In 1939, it was called Chan Kancabchén. Then, in 1970, its name became Kanka-Chen. Finally, in 1990, it returned to its original name, Kancabchén.

Population and Land Changes

Before 1937, many people lived and worked on the hacienda. However, things changed a lot because of a new law.

Land Reform

In 1937, the Mexican government, led by President Lazaro Cardenas, made a big change called agrarian land reform. This reform meant that large farms, like haciendas, were broken up. The land was then given to groups of farmers to share and work together. These shared lands were called ejidos.

After this change, the original landowners were only allowed to keep a small part of their property, about 150 hectares. This meant that the Hacienda Kancabchén no longer had a large community living on it. Only the owner's family lived in the main hacienda houses.

Population Numbers

According to a census in 2005, only 11 people lived in the community of Hacienda Kancabchén. The population on the hacienda changed a lot over the years, especially after the land reform.
