Hack Circle facts for kids
The Hack Circle was a special outdoor area in the center of Christchurch, New Zealand. It was like a small amphitheatre, which is a round or oval open-air theater with seats rising in steps around a central space.
This area was built in 1989 as part of making the city center better for people to walk around. It was officially opened on December 6, 1989, by the mayor at the time, Vicki Buck. For a while, the Hack Circle was a very popular spot for playing Hacky Sack, which is a game where you keep a small beanbag in the air using your feet. This is how the area got its nickname, "The Hack Circle." It also became a well-known place for different groups of young people to meet up and hang out.
The Hack Circle's Removal
The Hack Circle started to be taken down in February 2008. Instead of building a road, the area was changed into a newly designed pedestrian mall, which is a street or area where only people can walk, not cars. The work to improve the area where the Hack Circle used to be was finished in October 2008.
What Replaced the Hack Circle?
In 2009, a newspaper article mentioned the area that used to be the Hack Circle. It was now a paved space with some places to sit, but it no longer had the amphitheater shape. Paul Lonsdale, who managed the Central City Business Association, called this new paved area "The new Hack Circle."
