Hackthorne Gardens is a special house in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was built a long time ago, in 1928, and has been beautifully fixed up. This house has had a few different names over the years, like Shirley and Grace Hohepa Home and Maddison on Cashmere.

A Look Back: The History of Hackthorne Gardens

This amazing house was designed by an architect named William Trengrove. He built it in 1928 for a lawyer named Archibald Henry Anthony. The house was made in the Art Deco style, which means it has cool, sleek designs and geometric shapes. You can find Hackthorne Gardens on Hackthorne Road, up in the Cashmere Hills.

Changing Hands: From Home to Hotel

Over the years, Hackthorne Gardens has been used for many different things. In 1965, Mr. Anthony sold the house to a group called the New Zealand Trust Board. They changed its name to Shirley and Grace Hohepa Home. It became a place where children with intellectual disabilities could live and learn.

Later, in 1987, the Hohepa Home moved to a new location in Halswell. The house was sold again and became a bed and breakfast, a place where people could stay overnight. In 1999, it was sold once more. The new owners used it to provide accommodation for older people, calling it Maddison on Cashmere. They even added more rooms and facilities by digging under the house!

In 2010, the house was sold again. This time, it was used as a fancy place for people to stay, offering luxury accommodation.

Modern Makeover: A New Chapter

The property went up for sale again in 2013. Its current owner bought it in 2015. They spent a lot of time and effort making the house even better and stronger. This big renovation project was finished in 2016.

Today, Hackthorne Gardens is a large and impressive house. It has 11 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. There's also a library, a lounge, a bar, and two dining rooms. The renovation work was so good that it won a Heritage Tourism Award in 2018.
