Hafdís Bjarnadóttir, born in 1977, is a talented composer and electric guitarist from Iceland. She became well-known in 2013. That year, she wrote a piece called "Thordis' Fichu." It was inspired by a knitting pattern for a shawl! In 2015, her work "Sounds of Iceland" became very popular. This piece was like a musical trip across Iceland. Hafdís Bjarnadóttir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, on August 17, 1977. She started playing the electric guitar when she was 12 years old. At first, she focused on rock and folk music styles.

Her Musical Journey

Hafdís studied jazz guitar at a music school in Iceland called Tónlistarskóli FÍH. She finished her studies there in 2002. Later, in 2007, she earned a bachelor's degree from the Iceland Academy of the Arts. She then went on to get a master's degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 2009.

Her Unique Music Style

Hafdís's music mixes different styles like jazz, rock, folk, classical, and modern music. She often creates pieces that use surprising combinations of instruments. She has released two albums on her own. She has also written music for special requests, both for single instruments and for groups of musicians.

Her album JÆJA, released in 2009, was even nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards. In 2013, she composed "Á báðum áttum" for flute, clarinet, and percussion. She also wrote "Jólastökur," a choir piece for Christmas 2013. This piece was asked for by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. Her famous works, "Thordis' Fichu" and "Sounds of Iceland," followed in 2013 and 2015.

Later Works

In 2017, Hafdís composed "Wind Roses" for a music festival in Helsinki. This piece was inspired by Iceland's wind roses. These are tools used to measure which way the wind is blowing. "Wind Roses" combined sounds from the piano, bass, flute, clarinet, and cello.

In 2019, Hafdís Bjarnadóttir created "A Northern Year" for Passepartout Duo. This piece tells the story of the sun's position over Reykjavík throughout the year. She used scientific information about the sun to help her compose the music.
