Hagerstown was once a small town located in Preble County, in the U.S. state of Ohio. Today, it no longer exists as a populated place, which is why it's called an "extinct town."

What Happened to Hagerstown?

Hagerstown had a short history. A post office, which is where mail is sent and received, was opened there in 1832. This post office served the community for many years. However, it closed down in 1855.

Why Did the Town Disappear?

The main reason Hagerstown faded away was the arrival of the railroad. When new train lines were built, they often brought business and people to different areas. In this case, the railroad was built closer to a nearby town called West Manchester.

Because the railroad went to West Manchester, businesses and people started moving there instead of Hagerstown. This meant that Hagerstown's population slowly became smaller and smaller until the town was no longer active. It's a good example of how new transportation can change where people live and work.
