How Hair Clippers Work
Hair clippers have two sharp blades that look a bit like tiny combs. These blades are very close together, one on top of the other. When you turn the clipper on, one blade slides quickly from side to side.
As the clipper moves through your hair, the hair gets caught between the "teeth" of these comb-like blades. The sliding motion then cuts the hair, just like a pair of scissors would. It's a very quick and efficient way to trim hair!
The History of Hair Clippers
Hair clippers have an interesting past, starting with manual versions and later becoming electric.
Manual Clippers: The First Haircut Machines
The very first hair clippers that people operated by hand were invented sometime between 1850 and 1890. A barber from Serbia named Nikola Bizumic created them. These manual clippers quickly became popular for cutting hair short, especially for boys and men in places like schools, prisons, and the military.
Electric Clippers: A Modern Invention
Later, Leo J. Wahl invented the first electric hair clipper. Before this, he designed a small, hand-held massager for his uncle, Dr. Frank Wahl. Frank Wahl even opened a factory in Sterling, Illinois, to make and sell Leo's massagers.
While selling massagers to barbers, Leo noticed that their hair-cutting tools could be better. This gave him the idea to create an electric version of the hair clipper, making haircuts much faster and easier.
