Hakkı Atun was an important political leader in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. He was born in Famagusta on October 7, 1935. He is best known for serving as the Prime Minister from 1994 to 1996.

Early Life and Education
Hakkı Atun studied hard to become an engineer and city planner. In 1959, he finished his studies at Istanbul Technical University. He then went on to study urban planning at Manchester and Nottingham Universities. This education helped him prepare for his future roles in public service.
Starting His Public Service Career
After finishing his studies, Hakkı Atun began working in public service. From 1961 to 1975, he held several important positions. He was involved in planning and housing projects. For example, he was the Regional Director for planning in Limassol-Paphos in 1963. Later, he became the Head of the Planning and Construction Department in 1967. By 1975, he was the Undersecretary of Housing.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Hakkı Atun became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nicosia several times. He was elected in the general elections of 1976, 1981, 1985, and 1990. During these years, he was part of the National Unity Party.
Roles as a Minister
As an MP, Hakkı Atun held various ministerial positions. He served as the Minister of Settlement and Rehabilitation. He was also the Minister of Finance, which means he managed the country's money. He also served as the Minister of National Education Culture, Youth and Sports. He even became the Secretary General of the National Unity Party. In 1983, he helped create the first government of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Serving as Speaker of the Assembly
Hakkı Atun was elected as the Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic twice. The Speaker is like the leader of the parliament. His first term was from 1985 to 1993. Later, he was re-elected as Speaker on October 4, 1996, and served until December 18, 1998.
Leading a Political Party and Becoming Prime Minister
In 1992, Hakkı Atun became the leader of the Democratic Party. This party was formed by him and other MPs who left the National Unity Party. In the 1993 elections, he was elected as an MP for the Democratic Party.
He then became the Prime Minister on January 1, 1994. He led a government that was a coalition between the Democratic Party and the Republican Turkish Party. He served as Prime Minister until August 16, 1996.
Later Life
After his time as Speaker, Hakkı Atun did not continue to be a part of the parliament. He is now the Honorary President of the Democratic Party. He can speak English and a little Greek. He is married and has two children. He is also related to Derviş Eroğlu, who was the third President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
