Hakkı Atun was an important political leader in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. He was born on October 7, 1935, in Famagusta. Mr. Atun served as the Prime Minister from 1994 to 1996. He also held the position of Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic multiple times.

Early Life and Education
Hakkı Atun completed his university studies in 1959. He graduated from Istanbul Technical University as an engineer architect. He then continued his education abroad. He studied urban planning at Manchester University and Nottingham University in the United Kingdom.
Public Service Career
After finishing his studies, Hakkı Atun began a long career in public service. From 1961 to 1975, he held various important roles. In 1963, he became the Regional Director for Planning in Limassol-Paphos. Later, in 1967, he was made the Head of the Planning and Construction Department. By 1975, he was serving as the Undersecretary of Housing. These roles show his early dedication to improving public infrastructure and living conditions.
Political Journey
Hakkı Atun's political career began in 1976. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nicosia. He represented the National Unity Party in several general elections. During this time, he held various ministerial positions. He was the Minister of Settlement and Rehabilitation, and later the Minister of Finance. He also served as the Minister of National Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports.
Speaker of the Assembly
In 1983, Hakkı Atun became a member of the assembly that helped create the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. He was the Minister of Settlement in the first government of the new republic. From 1985 to 1993, he served as the Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic. This is a very important role, similar to the head of a country's parliament.
Leading the Democratic Party
In 1992, Hakkı Atun played a key role in forming the Democratic Party. He became the party's president. He was elected as an MP for the Democratic Party in the 1993 general elections. He then served as Prime Minister from January 1, 1994, until August 16, 1996. He led coalition governments with the Republican Turkish Party. After his time as Prime Minister, he was again elected as the Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic on October 4, 1996. He held this position until December 1998.
Later Years and Personal Life
After 1998, Hakkı Atun no longer served in the parliament. He is now the Honorary President of the Democratic Party. He is married and has two children. He speaks English and a little Greek. He is also related to Derviş Eroğlu, who was the third President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
