Derviş Eroğlu, born on March 7, 1938, is a politician from Northern Cyprus. He was the president of Northern Cyprus from 2010 to 2015. Before becoming president, he served as Prime Minister for many years. He was also the leader of the National Unity Party twice. He holds the record for being the longest-serving Prime Minister and Member of Parliament in Northern Cyprus.
Early Life and Education
Derviş Eroğlu was born in Famagusta in 1938. He went to Istanbul University to study medicine. He graduated in 1963. Later, he became a specialist in urology, which is a type of doctor.
Political Career

Eroğlu started his political journey in 1976. He joined the Assembly of the Republic in what was then called the Turkish Federated State of Northern Cyprus. From 1976 to 1977, he was the Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports.
In November 1983, he became a member of the Constituent Assembly of Northern Cyprus. As the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP), he became Prime Minister several times. He served as Prime Minister from 1985 to 1993, and again from 1996 to 2004. After his party won the election in 2009, he became Prime Minister once more until 2010.
In 2005, Eroğlu stepped down as the leader of his party. He felt it was time for younger people to lead. However, he was re-elected as party leader in 2008.
On April 18, 2010, Derviş Eroğlu was elected as the President of Northern Cyprus. The United Nations does not officially recognize Northern Cyprus as a country. Because of this, they saw Derviş Eroğlu as the main negotiator for the Turkish Cypriot community.
In the 2015 elections, he was not re-elected. Mustafa Akıncı became the new president.
