The Seibels House: A Historic Gem

A Mystery from the Past

It's a bit of a mystery exactly when the Seibels House was built. Many old records were lost in 1865. This happened when Union soldiers, led by General William Tecumseh Sherman, burned parts of Columbia.

However, there's a clue! Someone found the year "1796" carved into a wooden beam in the basement. This makes experts think the house was built around that time. The early history of the house is not fully known. But it is still considered the oldest building in Columbia.

What is the Seibels House Today?

Today, the Seibels House is located at 1601 Richland Street. It is the main office for Historic Columbia. This group is a non-profit organization. A non-profit organization works to help the community. They do not aim to make money.

Historic Columbia works hard to protect the old buildings and culture of Columbia. They also care for Richland County. The grounds of the Seibels House are open for everyone to visit. It has a beautiful, restored garden. This garden is often used for special events like wedding receptions.
