The First Game: Half-Life
The very first game, also called Half-Life, came out in 1998. In this game, you experience the disaster at Black Mesa firsthand. Your main goal is to try and escape the lab while fighting off aliens and other dangers. It was a very important game because of its exciting story and new ways of playing.
Half-Life 2 and Its Stories
In 2004, the next big game in the series, Half-Life 2, was released. This game continued Gordon Freeman's adventure in a world taken over by an alien empire called the Combine. Half-Life 2 was followed by two extra parts, or "expansions," that continued the story: Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two. These episodes picked up right where the main game left off, adding more action and story.
Other Games in the Half-Life World
A different but related game called Portal was released in 2007. This game also takes place in the same universe as Half-Life, but it's a puzzle game where you use a special gun to create portals. In 2007, Portal, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, and another game called Team Fortress (which is a different type of game) were all sold together in one big collection. This collection was known as The Orange Box.
