About the Hamilton Building
The Hamilton Building was finished in 1893. It looks quite different from other buildings made around the same time. Many buildings from the late 1800s were very fancy. They often had lots of decorations. But the Hamilton Building has very few fancy details.
A Unique Design
Architects Whidden & Lewis designed this building. People say it was very new and modern for its time. It even looked like buildings that would be built many years later. The building's decorations are simple but cool. It has columns at the entrance made of iron covered in granite. There are also special rope-like designs. The outside walls are made of a unique type of brick.
Who Was Hamilton Corbett?
The Hamilton Building is six stories tall. It is named after Hamilton Corbett. He was the son of Henry W. Corbett. Henry W. Corbett was an important businessman and politician in Oregon. The Hamilton Building was also the first building in Portland designed in the Classical Revival style. This style uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.
