Hamilton Farmer's Market facts for kids
The Hamilton Farmers' Market is a super cool indoor market in downtown Hamilton, Ontario. It started way back in 1837! You can find it inside a big building called Lloyd D. Jackson Square, right where James Street and York Boulevard meet. People in Hamilton love this market because it has tons of different foods and products. You can find things grown right here in the area, and also special items from all over the world!
Market History
The Hamilton Farmers' Market is a really old and important part of Hamilton's history. It first opened its doors in 1837. It was set up at the corner of York and James Streets. A couple named Andrew and Mary Miller gave some land to the town of Hamilton. They wanted this land to be used just for a market.
The market has moved a few times over the years. Since August 1980, it has been in its current spot. This location is right next to the Hamilton Public Library.
Modern Market Upgrades
In 2011, the market got a big makeover! It was completely renovated to make it even better. Now, the market has:
- A wide variety of fresh, local produce and unique foods from different cultures.
- Almost 70 different vendors selling their goods.
- Delicious fresh foods that are made right there at the market.
- A special kitchen area for cooking shows and fun events.
- Better energy use and easier access for everyone.
- The famous Birks Clock Of The Charging Horsemen, which hangs proudly in the middle of the market.
Birks "Clock of the Charging Horsemen"
One of the coolest things at the market is the historic 1930 Birks "Clock of the Charging Horsemen." This amazing clock used to be at the Birks Building. It was moved to the Farmers' Market in 2010 after being fully restored.
Every 15 minutes, something special happens! Tiny knights on the clock joust and spin around the base. The clock also plays music and chimes. It sounds a lot like a carillon, which is a musical instrument made of bells. It's a fun sight to see while you're shopping!
