Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hampton Nature Reserve is a special place in England, near the city of Peterborough. It's famous for being home to the biggest group of great crested newts in all of Europe! This amazing reserve is protected because it's so important for nature. It is known as a Special Area of Conservation and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Exploring Hampton Nature Reserve

Hampton Nature Reserve is a huge area, about 300 acres big. That's like 150 football fields! It's managed by a group called Froglife. They work hard to keep the reserve a safe home for all its wildlife.

The reserve has many different parts. You can find ancient woodlands, some trees are 200 years old! There are also 340 ponds, which are perfect for newts and other water creatures. Large areas of grassland also provide homes for many animals. Volunteers help Froglife look after the reserve. They build special shelters called hibernacula for newts to sleep safely during winter. They also cut down some trees to let sunlight reach the woodland floor. This helps other plants grow. They even build piles of rotting plants for grass snakes to lay their eggs in!

Right next to the reserve is Haddon Lake. This lake used to be a brick pit, like many others in the Hampton area. Now, it's another great home for newts and a peaceful spot for all sorts of wildlife.

The Story of Hampton Nature Reserve

Before it became a nature reserve, this land was a busy brick pit. Workers dug up clay to make bricks until the 1990s. The way they dug and dumped extra material created a bumpy, wavy landscape. It looks a bit like the surface of the moon!

Once the brick pit closed down, nature slowly took over. Over time, many different animals and plants moved in. Now, it's a thriving home for wildlife.

Amazing Animals and Plants

Hampton Nature Reserve is most famous for its huge population of great crested newts. It's the largest group of these newts in all of Europe! But there's much more to see here.

The reserve is also important for rare algae called stoneworts. You might also spot water voles, which are small, furry animals that live near water. It's also the only place in Peterborough where you can find the grizzled skipper butterfly.

Many types of trees grow here, and beautiful wildflowers like the bee orchid bloom in the warmer months. You can also find a wide range of animals, including green woodpeckers, bats, and kestrels flying overhead. Look closely, and you might see grass snakes, colorful dragonflies, and damselflies darting around the ponds.
