How the Museum Started
The Hampton University Museum has a long and interesting history. It was started by Gen. Samuel C. Armstrong. He was the person who founded Hampton University itself! General Armstrong opened the museum in 1868. This was the same year he started the university.
When it first opened, the museum had a fun name. It was called the "Curiosity Room." It was a place where people could see interesting objects. Over time, this room grew into the amazing museum we know today.
