Museum History: How It Started
The Hampton University Museum began in 1868. It was founded by Gen. Samuel C. Armstrong. He was also the person who founded Hampton University itself. When it first opened, the museum was called the "Curiosity Room." It was a place to keep interesting objects and learn about different cultures.
