Handpresso SARL is a French company that makes small, portable machines for making espresso coffee. Imagine being able to make a fresh shot of espresso almost anywhere! The company was started in 2006 by Henrik Nielsen in Fontainebleau, France.
The first product Handpresso made was called the Handpresso WILD ESE. It was the very first handheld espresso maker. This cool device is now sold in 25 different countries! The first Handpresso machines were designed to use special coffee "pods" called E.S.E. coffee pods. The design of the Handpresso WILD ESE comes from Denmark.
Handpresso's Achievements
In 2008, Handpresso won seven different international awards for its design. These awards included the IF and Formland prizes, which are very important in the design world.
In 2012, the company launched a new product called the "Handpresso Auto." This was an espresso machine made especially for use in a car!
A year later, in 2013, the Handpresso Wild Hybrid received a special award. It was named "National Geographic's Gear of the Year." This shows how useful and well-designed their products are for people who love to explore.
How Handpresso Machines Work
The Handpresso Wild machine works by building up pressure. You pump the unit until it reaches about 16 bar of pressure. To make coffee, you add hot water to a small tank that holds 50 ml. This hot water can come from a kettle or a thermos.
Next, you put in either an E.S.E. coffee pod or a "Domepod" which holds ground coffee. Then, you just push a button to start making your espresso! To stop the coffee from flowing, you push the button back. While the coffee is being made, the pressure inside the machine goes down from 11 bar to about 8 bar.
The temperature of the water is very important for making good coffee. If you use freshly boiled water from a kettle, it will be about 203°F (95°C) when it touches the coffee. Water from a thermos might be a bit cooler, but even temperatures around 176°F (80°C) can still make a good cup of coffee with most types of beans.
Handpresso has also protected its ideas with several international patents. This means their unique inventions are legally protected around the world.
