A portrait of Hanna Brooman

Hanna Brooman (born August 21, 1809, died February 7, 1887) was a talented Swedish woman. She was a composer, a translator, and a teacher. Hanna worked as a teacher at the famous Dramatens elevskola (a school for actors) in Stockholm. She taught there from 1847 to 1884, except for a few years.

Hanna Brooman's Early Life and Career

Hanna Brooman was the foster child of Johan Erik Brooman, who was an opera singer. She never got married. As an adult, she taught music and languages in Stockholm for many years.

Teaching at the Royal Theater School

In 1847, Hanna Brooman started teaching at the Dramatens elevskola. This was a special school for young actors and ballet dancers. It was connected to the Royal Dramatic Theatre and Royal Swedish Opera.

Before Hanna joined, the students lived at a boarding school. But that school closed in 1846. So, Hanna was hired to teach the students their basic school subjects.

What Hanna Taught

Hanna Brooman taught many different subjects to both boys and girls. She taught them about Christianity, writing, and how to play the piano. She also taught French, German, Italian, history, and geography. For the girls, she also taught sewing and needlework.

People thought highly of Hanna as a teacher. Erik af Edholm called her "a good teacher and person" in 1869. Frans Hedberg wrote about her after she passed away. He said she taught with a lot of love and patience. She cared for all her students, even those who found learning difficult.

Hanna's Other Talents

Besides teaching, Hanna Brooman was also a composer and a translator. She translated and changed plays from other languages for theaters in Stockholm. She also wrote music for the piano. Her music is described as gentle and melodic. It shows the style of Swedish Romantic music from the 1830s and 1840s.

Hanna Brooman was given the H. M. The King's Medal. This is a special award from the King of Sweden.
