Hanna Ferlin's Life Story
Early Life and Family
Hanna Augusta Ferlin was born in Färgelanda, Sweden, on August 15, 1870. Her father, Johan Albert Ferlin, was a church leader called a provost. Her mother was Sofia Söderqvist. Hanna was the youngest of their nine children.
Becoming a Photographer
In the late 1890s, Hanna Ferlin started her career. She worked as an assistant photographer in Vänersborg at a studio owned by Karl and Alfred Vilner. This is where she learned all the skills needed to be a photographer. While working there, she met a writer named Birger Sjöberg.
In 1904, Hanna returned to her hometown of Färgelanda. She opened her very own photo studio there, which she called "Hanna Ferlin." She took many different kinds of photos. She captured portraits of people, beautiful landscapes, buildings, and groups of people working. She also photographed special social events like weddings.
Fighting for Women's Right to Vote
Hanna Ferlin was very passionate about women having the right to vote. This movement is called women's suffrage. She became the leader of the Färgelanda group of the National Association for Women's Suffrage (LKPR). She led this group until 1913.
In 1913, Hanna moved to the United States. It seems she was not happy with how slowly women's voting rights were progressing in Sweden. She lived in the United States for seven years.
Return to Sweden
Hanna Ferlin returned to Färgelanda in 1920. By this time, women in Sweden had finally gained the right to vote, which had been agreed upon in 1919. After her return, Hanna opened another photo studio in Färgelanda.
Hanna Ferlin passed away on June 23, 1947. She was buried in the Färgelanda Cemetery.
