Hans Andrias Djurhuus (born October 20, 1883 – died May 6, 1951) was a famous Faroese poet and teacher. He wrote many poems and songs. He is especially known for his national poems about the Faroe Islands and his fun songs for children. He also wrote church songs, short stories, plays, fairy tales, and even one novel.

About His Life

Hans Andrias Djurhuus was born and passed away in Tórshavn, the capital city of the Faroe Islands. His older brother, Janus Djurhuus, was also a well-known poet. They grew up in a house called Áarstova in the old part of Tórshavn. Because of their home, the brothers are often called the Áarstovu Brothers (Áarstovubrøðurnir).

Their great-grandfather, Jens Christian Djurhuus, was important too. He was the first person to write poems in the Faroese language. This shows that writing was a family talent!

After finishing school, Hans Andrias worked as a fisherman for a short time. Then, he went to a folk high school (Føroya Fólkaháskúli). He later studied at the Faroese Teachers School (Føroya Læraraskúli), finishing in 1905. He became a school teacher in different towns, including Sandavágur, Klaksvík, Tvøroyri, and Tórshavn. He also worked as an editor for the newspaper Dúgvan from 1909 to 1910.
