Hans Frede Nielsen (born May 20, 1943 – died January 9, 2021) was a Danish expert in languages. He was a special kind of professor who studied how languages change over time. This field is called historical linguistics. He worked at the University of Southern Denmark. His main focus was on Germanic languages, like English, German, and Danish, and also on ancient writings called runes.

About Hans Frede Nielsen
Hans Frede Nielsen was born in a Danish town called Bramming on May 20, 1943. His parents were Frede and Sonja Nielsen.
His Education Journey
From 1963 to 1966, Nielsen studied English and German at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. He then received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed him to study at Cambridge University in England. There, he earned a Bachelor's degree (BA) in 1968. Later, he completed a Master's degree (MA) in Anglo-Saxon Studies. Anglo-Saxon Studies is about the history and language of early England. One of his teachers at Cambridge was Dennis Howard Green.
Teaching and Research Career
After his studies in England, Nielsen returned to Denmark. He worked as a high school teacher for several years. In 1975, he started lecturing at the Institute for English at Odense University.
In November 1980, he earned his PhD. His special research paper was titled Old English and the Continental Germanic languages. This paper has been published many times. In 1999, Nielsen became a professor at the University of Southern Denmark. He taught historical linguistics, which is the study of how languages develop.
He retired in September 2006 and became a Professor Emeritus. This title means he was a retired professor who kept his academic honors. Even after retiring, he continued to teach and do research until he passed away in 2021.
Other Contributions
Nielsen was also a member of the Fryske Akademy starting in 1996. He helped start and edit a journal called NOWELE. This journal is published by John Benjamins Publishing Company.
