Harald Rolf Maartmann (born January 5, 1926 – died January 1, 2021) was a talented cross-country skier from Norway. He was known for his strong performances in the 1950s. Cross-country skiing is a winter sport where skiers glide across snow-covered terrain.

Harald Maartmann: A Skiing Star

Harald Maartmann was a top cross-country skier in his time. In 1950, he won two big races at the Norwegian Championships. These were the 17-kilometer and 50-kilometer events. That same year, he competed in the World Championships in Lake Placid, New York. He finished an impressive fifth place in the 50-kilometer race. Two years later, in 1952, Harald competed in the Winter Olympics held in his home city of Oslo. He placed eighth in the 50-kilometer event there.

Harald came from a family with interesting connections. His father, Rolf Maartmann, was a soccer player. His cousin, Titti Maartmann, was a luger. A luger is an athlete who races down an icy track on a small sled. His grandfather, Harald Sigvart Maartmann, was the first leader of a company called Ringnes. His great-grandfather, Knud Geelmuyden Fleischer Maartmann, was a Norwegian politician. A politician is someone who works in government.
