Harnett County Training School, also known as Harnett High School, was a very important school. It was built for African-American students in Dunn, North Carolina. History of the School
The Harnett County Training School first opened in 1922. It was built to provide education for African-American students. At that time, schools were often segregated. This meant Black and white students went to different schools.
The school complex grew over the years. New buildings were added to help more students. It served the community for many decades.
What is a Rosenwald School?
One of the main buildings at Harnett County Training School was a Rosenwald School. These schools were very special. They were built with help from Julius Rosenwald. He was a businessman who led Sears, Roebuck and Company.
Mr. Rosenwald created a fund to help build schools for African-American children. This was mostly in the Southern United States. His fund helped build over 5,000 schools, shops, and teacher homes. These schools gave many students a chance to learn.
Buildings at the School
The Harnett County Training School complex includes several buildings. The main school building was built in 1922. It had two stories and a flat roof. It was designed in the Colonial Revival style.
Over the years, more buildings were added. In 1927, a classroom annex was built. A gym and auditorium were added in 1948. Later, in 1956, a library, an office building, and a cafeteria were built. These buildings helped the school serve its students better.
