Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Harriet Coverston is an American computer scientist and software developer. She is known for her work with huge computer storage systems. She also helped develop important parts of powerful computer systems. Harriet is an expert in systems that store and keep large amounts of data safe for a long time. She has worked on many big projects and created new products in this field.

Harriet Coverston's Career

Harriet started her career in 1967 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. There, she worked on a computer system called the CDC 7600 Livermore Timesharing System. She was part of a small team of five people. She stayed there until 1974.

After that, she moved to Control Data Corporation. She worked there for 12 years. At Control Data, she helped create the Cyber 205 Operating System and CDCNET. An operating system is the main software that runs a computer, like Windows or macOS.

In 1986, Harriet helped start a company called LSC (Large Scale Configurations). For more than 15 years, she was the vice-president of technology there. LSC made software called SAM-QFS and QFS. These programs helped manage "cold" or archived data. Cold data is information that isn't used often but needs to be saved. QFS is a very fast file system, which is how a computer organizes and finds files. SAM helps manage storage in advanced ways.

In 2001, Sun Microsystems bought LSC. Harriet Coverston then became a "distinguished engineer" at Sun. She held this important role until 2010. Oracle later bought Sun Microsystems in early 2010.

In March 2011, Harriet co-founded a company called Versity with Bruce Gilpin. She has been its Chief Technology Officer (CTO) since it started. Versity is a company that develops software for archiving, which means storing data for long periods.

Education

Harriet Coverston earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Mathematics. She received her degree from Florida State University.

Patents

Harriet has helped create and owns many patents. A patent is a special right given to an inventor. It means others cannot make, use, or sell their invention without permission. Her patents are mostly about how computers store, manage, and access large amounts of data.
