Harriet Letitia Martin was born in London in 1801. Her mother, Harriet Evans Martin, was also a writer. Her father, Richard Martin, was a politician in Ireland. Harriet came from a family of writers, including her niece Mary Letitia Martin and her cousin Violet Florence Martin.
Harriet lived in London when she was young. Her father was a Member of Parliament (MP) there, representing Galway. She also grew up in her family's homes in Ballynahinch, County Galway, and in Dublin.
In 1826, her father had to leave his job as a politician. Harriet, her mother, and her sister moved with him to France. They lived there until her father passed away in 1834.
Harriet traveled a lot in Europe and North America. In Paris, she met another writer named John Banim. While staying with him, she wrote her most famous book, Canvassing.
Later in her life, Harriet settled in Dublin. She lived there with her sister. She passed away in Dublin in 1891 and never married.
