Harsco started way back in 1853 as a company that made cars. It was first called The Harrisburg Car Manufacturing Company. Later, in 1935, it changed its name to Harrisburg Steel Corporation.
After buying several other companies, it became Harsco Corporation in 1956. At that time, it had three main parts: Metals & Minerals (now called Harsco Environmental), Rail, and Industrial.
By the early 1990s, Harsco's products and services were used in many areas. These included defense, industry, business, and construction. The company had over 250 places for making, recycling, selling, and servicing its products in 14 countries.
In 2018, Harsco bought a company called Altek. Altek makes equipment for processing aluminum in the UK.
In 2019, the Metals & Minerals part of Harsco changed its name to Harsco Environmental. That same year, Harsco also bought Clean Earth. Clean Earth is a US company that offers environmentally friendly ways to handle special types of waste.
In April 2020, Harsco Corporation bought the Environmental Solutions business (ESOL) from another company called Stericycle, Inc.
Today, Harsco is the main company with two big divisions: Clean Earth and Harsco Environmental. They also own other companies like ALTEK, SteelPhalt, and Black Beauty Abrasives.
