Hazel Levesque facts for kids
Hazel Levesque is a brave fourteen-year-old demigod. She is the daughter of Pluto, the Roman god of the underworld, and Marie Levesque. Hazel first appears in the book The Son of Neptune at a special camp called Camp Jupiter. It is later revealed that she has actually returned from the dead, with help from her half-brother, Nico di Angelo.
Hazel's Story
Hazel grew up in the 1940s in New Orleans, a city known for its unique culture. Her mother owned a shop that sold special charms. When Hazel was born, her father, Pluto, offered her mother a wish. Her mother wished for great wealth, but this wish turned into a strange power for Hazel. She could control precious metals and gems, but it felt more like a curse at first.
Hazel died when a powerful ancient being named Gaea tried to use Hazel's earth powers. Gaea wanted to bring back a giant named Alcyoneus. Hazel's mother decided not to help Gaea. To stop Alcyoneus, Hazel and her mother bravely buried themselves deep under the earth. This stopped Alcyoneus from returning right away, but it also meant they both died.
After her death, Hazel's spirit was being judged. She gave up the chance to go to a peaceful afterlife called Elysium. Instead, she chose to save her mother from punishment. So, they both went to the Fields of Asphodel, a different part of the Underworld.
Later, before the events of The Lost Hero, Nico di Angelo found Hazel in the Underworld. He was visiting his own sister, Bianca. With the "Doors of Death" open, Nico was able to bring Hazel back to the living world. He then took her to Camp Jupiter. Hazel and Nico are very protective of each other, just like true siblings.
Powers and Skills
Hazel is described as having cocoa-colored skin, curly cinnamon-brown hair, and golden eyes. She has a special tattoo from her time in the Roman legion.
At first, her power over precious metals and gems felt like a curse. But she learned to control it! She can now make valuable stones and metals appear and use them without bad consequences. She can also sense things hidden underground.
Hazel is a very skilled horse-rider. She is also good with a spatha, which is a type of sword. She even tamed a magical horse named Arion, who loves to eat precious metals! Because of her time in the Underworld, Hazel knows a lot about it.
During the adventure in The House of Hades, a goddess named Hecate taught Hazel how to use something called the Mist. The Mist is like a magical fog that can hide things and create illusions. Hazel became very good at manipulating it.
After a big battle called the Second Gigantomachy, Hazel was promoted. She became a centurion, a leader of a group of demigods, in the Fifth Cohort. Her boyfriend, Frank Zhang, was the previous centurion.
In The Tyrant's Tomb, Hazel finally broke her curse with Frank's help. This was confirmed in The Tower of Nero. It turned out that a prophecy from the goddess Juno was true: a descendant of Poseidon would one day wash away her curse.
Hazel and Frank became the best praetors (high-ranking leaders) Camp Jupiter has ever had. In The Tyrant's Tomb, they teamed up with Apollo and Meg McCaffrey. They worked together to protect Camp Jupiter from dangerous emperors and an undead king.
