Heather Has Two Mommies is a children's book written by Lesléa Newman and illustrated by Diana Souza. It was first published in 1989. This book was one of the first stories for kids that showed families with two moms. It became very well known. While some people think it was the very first picture book about lesbian parents, another book called When Megan Went Away also had lesbian characters and came out ten years earlier.
How the Book Started
The idea for Heather Has Two Mommies did not come from Lesléa Newman herself. One day, while Newman was out walking, some parents who were lesbians asked her for a favor. They wanted her to write a children's story about a family like theirs.
These parents explained that they could not find any books to show their daughter that featured a family with two moms. Newman wrote the story to help these parents. She did not expect the book to cause a lot of discussion or controversy later on.
What the Story is About
The story is about a young child named Heather. She is raised by two lesbian women. One is her biological mother, Jane, who gave birth to her. The other is her biological mother's partner, Kate.
At Heather's playgroup, her family situation is talked about in a simple and positive way. Other children's families are also discussed. At first, Heather feels a little sad when she realizes that many of her friends at the playgroup have a daddy, and she does not. Molly, who takes care of the children at the playgroup, helps everyone understand. She makes sure all the children know that every family is special. She teaches them that no one type of family is better than any other.
