Hector Og Maclean, also known as Eachann Óg Maclean in Scottish Gaelic, was an important leader in Scottish history. He was born around 1540 and became the 13th Chief of Clan MacLean. This means he was the main leader of the MacLean family group. He also held the title of the 9th Laird of Duart, which means he owned the lands of Duart.
Hector Og Maclean became chief after his father, Hector Mor Maclean, 12th Chief, passed away. He led the clan for about five years.
Early Life and Leadership
Hector Og Maclean was born around 1540. When his father, Hector Mor Maclean, died, Hector Og took over as the clan chief. During his time as chief, he managed the clan's money and lands. He also built a home for himself on the island of Iona. You can still find parts of this old house near Port-a-Churraich.
Family and Marriage
In 1557, Hector Og Maclean married Janet Campbell. She was the daughter of Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll, a very important noble family.
Together, Hector Og and Janet had several children:
- Sir Lachlan Mor Maclean, who later became the clan chief after his father.
- Mary Maclean, who married Angus MacDonald, 8th of Dunnyveg.
- Janet Maclean, who married Roderick MacLeod of Lewis.
- Marian Maclean, who married Hector Roy Maclean, 5th Laird of Coll.
Passing Away
